Two new Period-3 varieties have recently surfaced. They both appear to be from a same hitherto unknown maker and are hereby classified as BG-1336 and BG-1337. Both have a Liberty head on the obverse (two distinctly different designs). BG-1336 is undated and BG-1337 shows the date of 1849. They both share the same reverse displaying an eagle atop a scroll and "CALIFORNIA GOLD ONE DOLLAR" on the perimeter. Interestingly, BG-1337 appears to be the only Cal variety where one could easily read "LIBERTY" across the coronet and is also the earliest dated Cal of all Periods. Visual Guide to Cals has been updated to incorporate these two new varieties. Happy diggin'! - Ken, a.k.a. "CalGold" |
