Here is another Cal set one can try to assemble:
One Cal dated for each year from 1852 to 1882 (the years covering Periods 1 & 2). It appears there are no Cals dated for the following four years: * 1861 & 1862 (probably due to the Civil War in the East) * 1877 & 1879 (probably due to fears of suppression from U.S. Secret Service) While BG-607 (R-8, with 2 known specimens) is the only (and toughest) variety from Periods 1 & 2 whose date is 1857, one can always use one of Period 3's Cals that is back-dated to that year. 27 Cals needed to complete this Year Set. Or, 28 Cals if one cares to include one from four varieties from Period 3 that is back-dated to an earlier year, namely, 1851. |

BG-II lists 3 examples of BG607. I've seen one other, making the total 4 and the rating HR7.
I believe that there are only 2 known examples of 1858 dated pieces, including so-called period 3. There is a curious absense of 1862, 1863, 1877 and 1879 in the mainstream tokens as well. -- Mike Locke |

So, that makes it a bit easier to fill in the slot for the year, 1858. Yes, indeed, regarding these almost identical missing years between the Cals and tokens. |

Yah, I realized that there are a couple of period3 1858 pieces after I posted. Still, 1857 dated BG1301a is more common than any of those.
In tokens marked CALIFORNIA GOLD and CSDG sized that I know, we find the following dates, good luck figuring out why the gaps are there: 1807 1847 1849-1861 1865 1869-1872 1874-1876 1880-1886 1888 1891-1896 1898-1903 1912 1915 1932 1935 1936 Some of the dates commemorate events of the year (1849, 1894, 1915, 1932, 1935, 1936) but finding a rhyme or reason for other dates. 1807, 1847, 1869, 1870, 1871, 1874, 1883, 1886-1903, and 1912 are only found on very rare tokens. -- Mike Locke |
